Overview

What to expect.

Essential on a regular basis for great lifelong health as damaged or worn gums have been shown to allow disease into the body. A professional hygiene visit keeps your mouth feeling clean, fresh and well cared for, supporting strong gums, brighter teeth and lasting confidence.

Treatment removes plaque and calculus from above and below the gum line, clinicians also assess the efficacy of brushing and flossing and the impact of diet habits. Regular sessions help prevent inflammation and decay, spot erosion and wear changes thus helping to maintain great oral health.

questions
Why hygiene appointments are important?
  • Removes what brushing and flossing cannot

  • Maintaining gum health contributes meaningfully to overall health
  • Addresses underlying causes to bad breath
  • Removes surface stains through polishing

What does a hygienist appointment involve?

A dental hygienist appointment (also a professional clean) involves the removal of plaque and tartar build-up that cannot be removed by brushing alone. We clean around and between the teeth and below the gumline, then polish the surfaces to remove surface staining. Your hygienist will also assess your gum health and give you personalised advice on your home care routine and diet habits.

How often should I see the hygienist?

Most patients benefit from a hygienist appointment every six months alongside their dental check-up. Patients with gum disease, a history of heavy tartar build-up, or those undergoing orthodontic treatment may be advised to come more frequently – every three to four months. Your dentist or hygienist will recommend the right frequency for you.

Is a hygienist appointment painful?

For most patients, a hygienist appointment is comfortable, though you may experience some sensitivity, particularly if you have not had a professional clean for a while or if your gums are inflamed. If you find the appointment uncomfortable, please let your hygienist know. Local anaesthetic gel can be applied to numb the gums before treatment, and we are always happy to take things slowly.

Will my teeth feel different after a hygienist appointment?

Most patients notice that their teeth feel noticeably cleaner and smoother after a hygienist appointment. Some patients also see a reduction in surface staining. You may experience mild sensitivity for a day or two afterwards, particularly to cold. This is normal and should settle quickly. If sensitivity persists, please let us know.
