What types of dentures are available?
There are two main types: complete dentures (for patients who have lost all their teeth) and partial dentures (for patients who still have some natural teeth). Dentures can be made from acrylic or a combination of acrylic and metal (cobalt chrome). Implant-retained dentures are also available for patients who want a more stable, secure fit. We will advise you on the most suitable option for your situation.
How long does it take to get dentures?
How long does it take to get dentures?Getting new dentures usually involves four to six appointments over several weeks. We take impressions, record the correct bite and jaw position, carry out a trial fitting, and then fit the final dentures. This process ensures a comfortable, well-fitting result. Immediate dentures are also available, though these will require adjustment as the gums heal.
Will dentures affect my speech or eating?
There is usually an adjustment period of several weeks while you get used to wearing dentures. Speech may feel slightly different initially but improves quickly with practice. Eating with dentures takes some getting used to – we recommend starting with soft foods and building up gradually. Over time, most patients adapt well. If your dentures are uncomfortable or unstable, please come back so we can adjust them.
How do I look after my dentures?
Remove your dentures at night to allow your gums to rest. Clean them daily with a soft toothbrush and denture cleaner — not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive. Rinse them after meals where possible. When not being worn, keep them moist by storing them in water or a denture-soaking solution. Handle them over a folded towel or basin of water in case they are dropped, as they can break.
Can dentures be stabilised with implants?
Yes – implant-retained dentures (also called overdentures) use two or more implants to anchor the denture in place, significantly improving stability and confidence, particularly for the lower jaw. This is a popular option for patients who find conventional lower dentures uncomfortable or insecure. We can discuss whether this is suitable for you at a consultation.
